All About the Ant Hill Cooperative
Ant Hill Cooperative is a housing co-op in Rochester, New York. We are a supportive, affordable, and ecologically responsible place to live. We offer a place for the free exchange of ideas, building community, incubation of creative projects, and development a high quality of life by sharing resources. Ant Hill is an exciting, cohesive community, and a cheap, fun place to live.
We currently operate 2 houses, located at 960 & 964 S. Plymouth Avenue. We currently have 9 Resident Members who live in Ant Hill managed properties, and several General Members and Foodshare Members, many of whom live only a block or two away.
Ant Hill was inspired by the co-op system in Berkeley, as well as places like
CoRE,
CIF and
Nickel City Coop. We are associated with this larger cooperative movement through our membership in NASCO. Many people feel a need for communal, activist, and renter-controlled housing in Rochester. Along with our friends at the EcoHouse, an environmentally-themed rental co-op up the street, we are making great progress. We invite students, activists, creative persons, and anyone interested in good food, good people, and communal living to help make this dream a reality.
What is a co-op?
A cooperative (co-op) is a non-profit business operated for the benefit of its members. This co-op project is concerned with housing: we aim to purchase a large house which will then be run cooperatively. Not only is this an interesting way to live, it's less expensive because residents share resources. Take a look around the site, and drop us a line on the mailing list or swing by for a visit!
Our cooperative is somewhat unique in it's mix of Resident Members (who live in Ant Hill managed houses) and General Members (who live off-house). This allows us to offer cheap communal housing for those who want it while allowing some members to opt for more privacy and space by renting their own apartment.
