Ant Hill's members are primarily its residents, but other people can join us and take advantage of what the co-op has to offer. For current costs associated with each type of membership, see the Fees page. Also, please read the process for joining?
General Members
General members live in their own house or apartment but make use of the co-op facilities. They often want to be an active part of the co-op, but prefer having the kind of private space you can't have by living in it. Other general members are less interested in the cooperative housing aspects of Ant Hill, but want to help develop the co-op as a community resource. Dues are paid through a combination of money and chore hours. In return, general members are allowed to:
-
Make proposals and vote at meetings
-
May obtain a key for 24/7 access to the co-op
-
Receive a discount on meals
If you would like to become a general member, fill out an application (ignore the parts about housing). Send it to the housing & hospitality officer and it will be discussed at the next house meeting.
Foodshare
Foodshare members get all the benefits of general membership plus unlimited access to food purchased and prepared for general consumption at the co-op. The Ant Hill foodshare is vegetarian, though members are not restricted from purchasing their own meats. Foodshare members usually live near the Ant Hill.
Residents
Residential members get all that plus a private bedroom all to themselves (or split with a roommate, if they choose) in an Ant Hill house. Residents must be members in good standing. While all types of members must apply before joining the co-op, residential membership is additionally subject to availability of a room. If one is not available at the time you would like to move in, it is common to join first as a foodshare member and then move in when a spot becomes available. There are many apartments for rent in the immediate vicinity.
